RELEIF Nov09

Relief 2009
Lets consider a few simple "phase 1" approaches. It seems that perhaps we could try all of these at RELEIF, and then compare experiences. Please put your thoughts and or comments in here, such that we can start to compile opinions about each approach.
1. The "Distributed" Approach Technical_Proposal
This approach uses a centralized server, with backup of course, to host meta data and maintain a database of a series of nodes, where data are actually stored. Phase 1 would essentially consist of building a basic server with a single or couple nodes hosting data. This approach assumes using WMS or another service to distribute tiles of a "Global Virtual Layer" along with individual layers as options. This option doesn't rely on hosting source imagery in the first phase, but leaves the opportunity open in subsequent phases.
2. The "Central Storage" Approach
This is the Google model, based on the assumption of available computing resources. Phase 1 would essentially be What Chris Schmidt put together already, such that all raw data and tiles are stored on a central machine.
3. A "Hybrid" approach.
This approach would take the "Distributed" Approach and modify such that tiles are stored on a central server/servers and raw data are hosted by nodes. This would allow very fast access to tiles irregardless of node connection speed, which is assumed to be variable, and relieve the central server of the burden of hosting all of the raw data. Another hybrid approach might be to invert the relationship, and put the tiles at the edges of the network where they would be needed most, and relieve the central server of the burden of delivering tiles.
NPS is willing to host a centralized server to support the approach chosen by the group.
